What is a critical incident?
'Any incident faced by emergency services personnel that causes them to experience unusually strong emotional reactions which has the potential to interfere with their ability to function either at the scene or later. All that is necessary is that the incident, regardless of type, generates unusually strong feelings for workers and those involved personally'
Critical Incident Stress Debriefing
*At any time, the Wholistic well-being of a person could be undermined by a crisis:
Emotionally, Psychologically. Physically and spiritual effects can take over our lives
* employees can fall seriously ill whilst at work and the shock of seeing this is almost unbearable
* You or a close one could have or witness a car/train/plane accident
* Any one of us may be subject to the threat of armed raids or terrorism
* After combat and not settled back into civy street
Who can be on a CISD team?
Mental health debriefs and peer debriefs
* Mental Health Debriefs - Mental health professionals including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, and psychiatric nurses.
* Peer Debriefs - Public safety personnel including those involved with rescue squads, fire departments, sheriff's offices, police departments, ambulance services, and EMS administration. Medical personnel including physicians, nurses and others who have contact with the EMS system.
What is the role of the CISD Team?
The teams can play several roles:
* Provide debriefings when requested
* Provide for referrals to the mental health system or medical care when further care is needed for an individual
* Team functioning as a group (Team meetings, ongoing training)
* Provide for education of agency personnel in their area in conjunction with the Regional EMS Council staff.
